Goals

The goal of the Lynch Management Plan is to protect wetlands and preserve the ecology of the property while allowing appropriate public access. The Kittery Land Trust intends to manage the Lynch property and contiguous KLT protected properties as a single nature preserve.

Stewardship

To achieve our goals, KLT will do the following:

  • Manage invasive species.

When possible, phragmites will be eradicated from the marsh in the upper wetland, Parcel B, before they spread.

When possible, the Oriental bittersweet will be cut from trees where it is growing and eradicated if possible.

There is an infestation of Wooly Adelgid in the hemlocks which cannot be stopped. The larger dead trees will be felled for safety reasons.

  • Prohibit the use of motorized vehicles on the property except in emergencies or for access to adjacent properties owned and/or managed by KLT. Stones may be placed to route ATV drivers away from the property.

  • Prohibit commercial and industrial activities on the property.

  • Prohibit the location of permanent or temporary structures on the property. (This does not apply to deer stands.)

  • Build rustic trails to enhance low impact public access and to connect property with adjacent KLT properties.

  • Prohibit insecticide and herbicide use except in circumstances where a significant public health hazard exists or it is an essential tool in managing invasive species.

  • Prohibit removal of native vegetation.

  • Require that all dogs be on leashes and that any trash that is carried in be carried out.

  • Continue to allow legal hunting, walking, cross-country skiing, biking, nature observation, and other forms of low impact recreation.

  • Monitor the property every two years to ensure ecology is being preserved and trails are adequate.

  • Update the management plan to include results of monitoring activities.

Future Changes

Annual monitoring may lead to changes to the plan. Changes may include additional activities to manage invasive species, changes in location of trails, or changes in public use restrictions and requirements.
